Baseball Day 7 Preview: Three games for fun, one for keeps

  (BEIJING, August 19) -- Japan and the United States will face off to decide third and fourth place in the round robin portion on Day 7 of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Baseball competition at Wukesong Baseball Field on Wednesday, August 20.

  Cuba will face China at 10:30 a.m. (UTC/GMT +8) on Wukesong Baseball Field 2.

  Once mighty Cuba (5-1) has booked a berth in the semifinal and are in second place overall. It is still uncertain who they will face in their semifinal as this will be decided by the result of the game between Japan and USA.

  China is at the bottom of the standings with Netherlands and Chinese Taipei, out of medal contention.

  The hosts have the tournament's second lowest batting average (.201) and the highest earned-run average (6.45).

  Cuba's still potent offense has the tournament's second highest slugging percentage (.433), on-base percentage (.366) and RBIs (32). They have the fourth highest team batting average (.259) and the fourth lowest earned-run average (2.83).

  The Netherlands gets still perfect The Republic of Korea at 11:30 a.m. on the Main Field.

  The Republic of Korea (6-0) has booked a place in the semifinals with six straight wins. They are the overall tournament leaders. It is still uncertain who they will face in their semifinal as this will be decided by the result of the game between Japan and USA.

  Lee Dae-ho of The Republic of Korea has the tournament's best slugging percentage (.875) and the second highest number of RBIs with seven. He shares the lead for most tournament home runs with two.

  Netherlands, the European champions, have failed to find form, winning just one match, against Olympic Baseball debutants China. They have scored nine runs and conceded 40. The team's batting average (.172) is the lowest in the tournament.

  At 6:00 p.m. on diamond number 2 at Wukesong, Canada and Chinese Taipei will try to work out the kinks.

  Chinese Taipei's (1-5) loss to USA puts them at the bottom of the table with China and Netherlands, out of medal contention.

  Canada's (2-4) win over the Netherlands was bitter-sweet as they finished just shy of the top four teams, out of medal contention.

  Canada is four games behind the tournament leader, The Republic of Korea, while Chinese Taipei is five games behind.

  Despite their losses, Canada's pitchers have the tournament's second best earned-run average (2.12) and Chris Begg has the most strikeouts with 14.

  And finally, in the Day 6 feature, Japan and the United States will decide the final order of play at 7:00 p.m. on the Main Field

  Japan (4-2) booked a berth in the semifinal after defeating China 10-0 in seven innings via the mercy rule. They are tied for third in the tournament with the United States.

  Team USA (4-2) booked a berth in the semifinal after defeating Chinese Taipei in a nail-biter.

  This game will decide who finishes third and fourth, determining the semifinal match-ups between The Republic of Korea, Cuba, the United States and Japan.

  Japan's pitching staff is at the top of the table with an earned-run average of 1.59. They have recorded the most strikeouts in the tournament with 62 and given up 30 hits and 10 runs, nine of which were earned runs.

  Pitcher Wakui Hideaki of Japan is the tournament's win/loss leader with two wins in 13 innings pitched.

  The US offense leads the tournament with the highest team batting average (.276), slugging percentage (.502), on-base percentage (.367) and RBIs (34). They have scored seven homeruns, 23 doubles and 56 hits overall, with a slugging percentage of .502.
