WENZHOU, Southeast China, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The Olympic torch relay in southeastern Zhejiang province of China will kick off Sunday in the cities of Wenzhou, Shaoxing, Hangzhou, Ningbo and Jiaxing, provincial government official said Friday at a press conference. A total of 377 torchbearers will take part in the 3-day relay, running a total distance of 71.3 kilometers. Wenzhou, the first stop in Zhejiang, is renowned for its rapid economic growth especially in the private sector, awarded by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) as one of the world's most dynamic cities. The relay in Wenzhou will start from the city's Sports Center, and pass through Jiangxin Island, city's state-level tourist site, which preserves precious calligraphy by ancient Chinese poets and writers. The last leg in Zhejiang Province is in the city of Jiaxing, where the torch will tour the South Lake, where the first Congress of the Chinese Communist Party was held. After the relay in Zhejiang province, the Olympic torch will carry on its journey in Shanghai. |
