(BEIJING, August 20) -- Chinese Taipei defeated Canada 6-5 via the new extra innings rule, delivering Canada their fifth loss by a one-run margin at Wukesong Baseball Field on Wednesday, August 20.

In a tight game, Canada called in five different pitchers from the bullpen as Chinese Taipei relied on three relievers.

The teams matched each other hit for hit with nine apiece until extra innings, but an RBI single in the top of the twelfth and three Canadian strikeouts in the bottom of the inning sealed Chinese Taipei's victory.

Chinese Taipei opened the scoring 1-0 with a sacrifice fly by Pan Wu-hsiung in the bottom of the first to score Chang Chien-ming, who was on base with a single, and had advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Canada retaliated with four hits in the bottom of the first, including RBI singles by Nick Weglarz and Scott Thorman, to go ahead 2-1.

A solo homerun down the first base line by Lin Chih-sheng, an RBI single by Yeh Chun-chang and a two-run homer by Lin Che-hsuan gave Chinese Taipei a 5-2 lead in the third.

Adam Stern singled in the bottom of the third inning and scored on a sacrifice hit by Emmanuel Garcia as Chinese Taipei made two fielding errors and Canada reduced their lead to 5-3.

Starting pitcher Mike Johnson was out in the top of the fourth having conceded six hits and five runs as Canada rolled through five relievers in an effort to keep Chinese Taipei at bay.

Canada added a fourth run in the fourth inning as Stern tripled and then scored on a sacrifice ground-out by Emmanuel Garcia to close the gap 5-4.

The game was tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning as Stubby Clapp hit a solo homerun and Chinese Taipei introduced their second reliever, Ni Fu-te.

The new extra innings rule was implemented with the scores tied at the end of the 10th inning. Each team began with runners on first and second as they went up to bat and Chinese Taipei took a 6-5 lead with an RBI single by Chiang Chih-hsien in the top of the twelfth.

Ni claimed two strikeouts in the bottom of the inning before star closer Chang Chih-chia entered to take the win striking out pinch hitter Chris Robinson.

Both teams have now ended their Olympic campaign with Chinese Taipei (2-5) claiming a fifth place finish and Canada (2-5) finishing sixth overall.
