Hungary's Vajda claims Men's Flatwater C1 1000m gold

  (BEIJING, August 22) -- Hungary's Attila Sandor Vajda finished first in the August 22 final of the Men's Flatwater C1 1000 meter, with a time of 3:50.467 minutes. Spain's David Cal came in second, 2.284 seconds after Vajda, and third place went to Canada's Thomas Hall.

  Cal and Vajda claimed gold and bronze respectively in this event in 2004.

  Vajda was only eighth after the first 250m and sixth at the half distance, but he grabbed the lead in the third 250m and kept it until the end.

  Defending champion Cal sped up to second place in the second 250m, but failed to surpass Vajda and took silver.

  Uzbekistan's Vadim Menkov took the lead in the first 500m, but felt behind and finished fourth in the end. Hall outpaced Menkov to claim bronze in the last 250m.
