INDIAN WELLS, California, March 16, 2008 - Andy Murray admitted he was caught off guard by Jurgen Melzer on Sunday, but the Scot managed to adjust in time to book his third-round berth at the Indian Wells Masters Series.

Murray, winner of titles in Doha and Marseille already this year and ranked 11th in the world, quickly fell into an 0-4 hole against Melzer and had to fight his way back for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over the 85th-ranked Austrian.

"I didn't start great or particularly well," said Murray, who made it to the quarter-finals in Dubai last week, ousting world number one Roger Federer along the way.

"But he hit four or five good ones off my serve and was playing into the net all the time. I didn't expect it at all.

"I was more sort of shocked, because haven't seen him play that way. I don't mean in terms of the standard - he always plays tough. But in terms of the actual style the he was playing, I hadn't seen that before. I was a bit surprised. Took me a few games to get into it."

Murray, the 11th seed in the 5.7 million-dollar Pacific Life Open, which also features a women's tier one event, next faces big-serving Croatian Ivo Karlovic, a 6-3, 7-6 (7/2) winner over South African Rik De Voest.

"He can beat some of the best players and lose to guys you expect him to win against purely because the match can come down to three or four points," Murray said of Karlovic.

"Everybody knows how he plays. It's just a matter of if you win the big points or not."
