ABUJA, March 26 - Nigeria became the final men's soccer team to qualify for the Beijing Olympics when they beat South Africa 3-0 in a qualifying match on Wednesday. Striker Victor Anichebe, making his debut as a substitute, wrapped up victory for the under-23 team in the second half. Taye Taiwo had put Nigeria ahead before the break with a header from a corner before South Africa conceded an own-goal. Nigeria qualified for the Beijing Games with eight points ahead of Ghana, who finished their matches on seven. Nigeria, whose players will each get a $4,000 bonus from the government for qualifying, won gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Australia, Japan, South Korea, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Serbia, China, Argentina, United States, New Zealand, Honduras and Brazil had already qualified for the 16-team tournament at the Games from Aug. 8-24. |
