MIAMI, March 29, 2008 - Second-seeded Serbian Ana Ivanovic, seeking her second title in as many starts, cruised into the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open on Saturday. World number two Ivanovic, who won the women's title at Indian Wells on Sunday, opened her campaign at the prestigious men's and women's hardcourt tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over unseeded Frenchwoman Emilie Loit. Ivanovic, 20, needed just a scant 45 minutes to dismiss Loit, who was unable to muster a break point. Ivanovic, whose runner-up finish at the Australian Open propelled her to the world number two ranking in January, captured her sixth career title and first since September with a straight-sets win over Svetlana Kuznetsova in the Indian Wells final last week. However, she said momentum from that victory could only take her so far. "It's like a new tournament. Obviously, the time difference is a little bit hard. So you need some time to adjust as well," Ivanovic said. "It's completely different feeling here. So I really approach it like a new tournament. I want to focus on each match separately, and try to keep the level up." Ivanovic next faces former world number one Lindsay Davenport, a 6-2, 6-1 winner over France's Camille Pin. The rising Serbian star has never played Davenport, who took 11 months off to give birth to her first child, returning last September. Upon her return last year Davenport promptly won titles in Bali and Quebec City, and she has captured two titles already this year, at Auckland and Memphis. "It's going to be a very tough match," Ivanovic said. "Growing up I saw her winning in Grand Slams and she's such a great player and great champion, so I expect a very tough match tomorrow." Ivanovic's compatriot Jelena Jankovic, the fourth seed, had to battle for a 6-7 (7/9), 6-2, 7-6 (11/9) victory over Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson. After leveling the match, Jankovic fell behind 5-1 in the third. She fought back to force the tiebreaker, eventually closing out the match in two and ahalf hours. Fifth-seeded Anna Chakvetadze of Russia ousted Austria's Tamira Paszek 6-3, 6-2, while seventh-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia cruised past Venezuelan Milagros Sequera 6-2, 6-1. |
