(BEIJING, August 11) -- Tyson Gay of the United States hopes to win gold in the 100m at the Olympic Games this summer. In order to do that, though, he has to beat the current world record holder in the event, Jamaican Usain Bolt.

"In order to beat him, I have to run 9.6," said Gay. "This is what I trained my mind, trained myself to do, run 9.6."

Gay won gold in the 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics in Osaka, Japan. At the US Track and Field Olympic trials in June this year, he crossed the finish line of the 100m in 9.68 seconds. Although this time broke the world record, it was not officially recognized due to a 4.1 meter per second wind that exceeded the IAAF legal limit.

The American started running track at the age of 14 or 15. Most of his family members, including his mother and daughter, are here in Beijing to see him compete.

Gay goes against Jamaica's best in the final on August 16.
