(BEIJING, August 13) -- Down by one point with two seconds left, Latvia's Anete Jekabsone-Zogota went up for two in the paint and successfully brought her team a 79-78 win over Brazil in the preliminary round of the Olympic Women's Basketball tournament on Wednesday, August 13.

This is Latvia's first Olympic tournament win, bringing their record in group A to 1-2. Brazil remains without a victory 0-3.

On top of her clutch basket, Jekabsone-Zogota was crucial for Latvia's success throughout the game, netting 25 points, grabbing two rebounds and giving five assists. She made all of her six free throws and contributed three three-pointers.

Brazil's Soeli Zakrzeski was the high scorer for her team, taking 16 points and nine rebounds. Her teammates Kelly Santos and Adriana Pinto contributed 15 and 12 points respectively.

The South American champions led throughout the opening quarter, closing nine points ahead of Latvia at 23-14. In the second and third periods Latvia outscored their opponents, first by four and then by three points, to go to the fourth quarter down by two, 59-57.

Latvia completed the U-turn in the fourth quarter. The two teams kept within a close margin of each other and the score went through five lead changes in the period for a total of nine lead changes the whole game. With 23 seconds left, Latvia's Ieva Kublina hit a big three-pointer to pull ahead 77-75, but only 16 seconds later Brazil's Karen Rocha dropped one from downtown to give Brazil the advantage with seven seconds on the clock. Latvia called a timeout and returned to be saved with a miracle two-pointer by Jekabsone-Zogota, bringing the score to the final 79-78. Brazil went to a timeout but guard Pinto failed to hit one more two-pointer before the buzzer.

"They had a very good ending," said Pinto when asked to comment post-game. "We had many mistakes in defense as we weren't able to stop their shots and their easy lay-up."
