Lee Yongdae(L) and Lee Hyojung celebrate the victory
(BEIJING, August 16) -- Unseeded Lee Hyo-jung and Lee Yong-dae of the Republic of Korea upset third-seeded Indonesian pair Flandy Limpele and Vita Marissa 21-9, 12-21, 21-17 in the Mixed Doubles semifinals of the Olympic Badminton tournament on Saturday, August 16. The 10th ranked ROK duo completely outplayed the Limpele and Marissa in the opening game, limiting them to scoring a mere nine points. The Indonesia duo quickly recovered, though, bouncing from four points down early in the second game to reach 9-4 with a 9-0 run. Later they romped from 11-8 to 18-8 thanks to a seven-point run and held on to their lead. The two sides fought hard in the decider, and Limpele and Marissa had a three-point lead going into the technical timeout. Shortly after play resumed, the two Lees scored seven points in a row to reverse the tide and clinched the victory. "We had to follow their rhythm," said a frustrated Limpele, adding that "they were slowing the match down. "In the deciding game, we weren't playing to our best. I felt our level (of play) had dropped since the second game. "They were more aggressive and weren't tired at all." The ROK duo, surprise winners of this tournament, downed Athens silver medalists Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson in the quarterfinals. |
